Central Gardens

Project Overview

Yellowstone Landscaping was selected to reconstruct Central Gardens Play space for Boroondara City Council. Prior to starting this project,  Central Gardens was under the public spotlight. The park officially opened in 1900, and in 1960, the famous rocket ship was installed and became an icon within the local area.

Central Gardens has a specific aeronautical theme throughout with many details displaying the concept to discover and enjoy. The different concrete types capture different textures and replicates the moon’s surface including astronaut footprints and a milky-way pattern made with selected pebbles. Boroondara City Council recycled selected play equipment from the existing playspace, to mix in with new play equipment.

Iconic Space Theme

Touching on the ‘space’ theme, a large 3 tonne rock was installed to replicate a crater, and concrete spheres placed throughout the playspace  replicating planets. During construction, it was vital to stage the entire process like clockwork. The beloved existing rocket play piece was sent off site to be refurbished. Coming back with not just a new coat of paint, but compliant to the modern Australian Standards, not just the standards when rockets first went to the moon.

Central Gardens includes circular shade structures with a constellation laser cut pattern and interactive art panels that is surrounded by significant soft landscaping and garden areas to provide an all inclusive play space. The completion of the project improved accessibility and restored the local communities favourite family gathering space.
